Windmills and forts - canoe tour around Haarlem and Spaarndam
The Molens en Fortentocht (Windmills and Forts Tour) is a 21-kilometre (13-mile) canoe route in the surroundings of Haarlem and Spaarndam. Along the way you’ll encounter five fortresses of the Defence Line of Amsterdam: the Fort south of Spaarndam, the Fort near Penningsveer, the Fort near the Liebrug, the Fort along the Liede and the Fort near Vijfhuizen. You’ll also canoe past windmills, camp sites, cafés and restaurants, and the old Cruquius steam pumping station.
The Woudpolder canoe route
The Woudpolder Route (green route, 8.5 km; 5.3 miles) takes you on a varied trip through the polders and along the Fort near Krommeniedijk. In your canoe you’ll also pass by De Tweede Broekermolen (1631). It is one of the five windmills that were used to keep the polder dry. Also on your route is a sluice built in 1874 that connects the twin lakes of Alkmaardermeer and Uitgeestermeer with the water-rich Uitgeesterbroek polder.
This canoe tour along lake Naardermeer takes you from Muiderslot castle, the Muizenfort and Fort H in the vicinity of Fort Coehoorn to the fortified town of Naarden, along the Werken aan de Karnemelksloot (part of Naarden’s defence system) and via Fort Uitermeer to the fortified town of Weesp. On your way you’ll encounter windmills, portage points, mooring spots, and various cafés and restaurants.
