The continuous footpath Defence Line of Amsterdam is a unique hiking route of no less than 135 kilometres (84 miles), which connects the towns of Volendam and Muiden. Along the way you’ll be passing by dikes, sluices, engineer depots, fortresses and batteries. This impressive route really takes you back in time. For years the Defence Line led an anonymous existence, giving flora and fauna ample opportunity to develop virtually undisturbed. It’s a perfect area for hikers. Let yourself be surprised by the rural tranquillity and natural beauty of this green belt surrounding the metropolis of Amsterdam.
