Zuiderzee Route

Fietsroute langs de forten
This bike tour partly follows the borders of the IJsselmeer, the enormous lake that was created by closing off the Zuiderzee (literally: South Sea) by a dam. Cycling the Zuiderzee Route will give you a taste of the rich past of the so-called ‘Golden Circle’ – a string of historic towns encircling the former Zuiderzee. Old times come alive along this bike route that is signposted from start to finish. Those who pay attention won’t have to miss a thing. Old fishing ports, green forests and plenty of culture are awaiting you.

Via the towns of Purmerend, Ilpendam, Monnickendam, Volendam, Edam and Kwadijk you cycle to the Fort near Edam (constructed in 1912), the Pompsluis (pump sluice), the Fort north of Purmerend and the Fort near Kwadijk. Other sights that you’ll encounter along the way include the remaining bell tower of the Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk (a church demolished in 1883), the Jewish cemetery along the Oorgat, and the Zuidpolder and Katwoudermolen windmills.
