This cycling route takes you to fortresses, villages and sluices. Among the first things you’ll encounter is the scenic town of Spaarndam, which is well worth a visit. This quaint old fishing village not only takes its fame from its two forts, but also from its sluices. With the city of Haarlem on your right, you continue your tour on small paths that traverse the green, water-rich polder landscape, passing by age-old windmills, farms and various fortresses: Fort Vijfhuizen, the Fort near the Liebrug, the Fort near Penningsveer, the Fort south of Spaarndam and the Fort north of Spaarndam. The final part of the route takes you along the river Spaarne, right to the lively centre of Haarlem.
