Fortification Act

Fortification Act. The use of modern, powerful artillery during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871 sparked concerns over Holland’s poor defence system. This resulted in the Wet tot regeling en voltooiing van het vestingstelsel (Vestingwet) (Act regarding the regulation and completion of the fortification system; Fortification Act) of 1874 that stipulated, amongst other things, the construction of a Defence Line of Amsterdam. It also ordered the improvement or construction of a number of other defensive structures. The plans mentioned in the Fortification Act had to be executed and completed within eight years, i.e. before 1883.
