A tour of discovery in the Fort along Pampus

Harm Hasenaar
The Fort along Pampus is situated in Lake IJmeer, approximately 2.5 kilometres (1.5 miles) north of the entrance to the harbour of the fortified town of Muiden. The Fort Island Pampus has a unique setting and is the most frequently visited part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam, attracting over 40,000 people each year. Pampus houses a visitor centre that offers information about the entire Defense Line of Amsterdam.
The island can only be reached by ferry, private boat or canoe. The ferry crossing takes about 20 minutes and is an experience in itself! Upon arrival you’ll be welcomed by the watchman of the fort, just like in the old days. The island of Pampus itself offers a great variety of activities: Pampus Xperience: guided tours, wandering through the fortress on your own, treasure hunts and games. And from the terrace of the cafe you can experience great views over the water, where sailboats circle around. Once a military bastion, Pampus is now an island that offers peace, pleasure and enjoyment to young and old. History boring? Not on Pampus!
