The Haarlemmermeer: Forts and the Cruquius pumping station

museum cruquius

Grab the bike for a tour of the Haarlemmermeer! The bike trail takes you past Fort Vijfhuizen, Fort Aalsmeer, Fort Hoofddorp and the beautiful Cruquius pumping station.

The Cruquius pumping station is one of the three main stations that dried the Haarlemmermeer lake. It is named after the cartographer and water engineer Nicolaas Samuelsz Cruquius. He provided a draft design for the reclamation of the Haarlemmermeer. Although he did not built  this pumping station himself, it was named after him because his plan was used as the basis for the final impoldering.
