The Defence Line of Amsterdam (Stelling van Amsterdam)

A remarkable defensive ring made up of 46 forts and batteries as well as a multitude of dikes and sluices encircles the Dutch capital of Amsterdam. It’s the Defence Line (or ‘Stelling’) of Amsterdam. A monument of Dutch history, the Defence Line is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. People young and old can visit these extraordinary locations to enjoy playful guided tours, interactive exhibitions, and exciting tours of discovery through the fortresses. In the surroundings of the ‘Stelling’ there’s much to explore as well; you and your children can embark on hiking and biking tours of varying lengths.

A day out at the Defence Line with your kids

The ‘Stelling’ offers families a fun and active day out. Children can learn about the history of the Defense Line of Amsterdam in a playful manner. Several of the Defence Line forts present special activities for children, such as children’s theatre, games and treasure hunts, while you can enjoy tours, music and outdoor cafés. If the weather gods are kind, you can make fun hiking and biking trips in the typical Dutch landscape filled with quaint villages, dikes, meadows and ditches. For a truly exciting experience, you can also explore the area by canoe. A visit to the Defence Line of Amsterdam makes for an unforgettable day for you and your family.

Other things to do

  • The annual events presented by the Defence Line of Amsterdam – the opening of the season in the spring, the cultural festival ‘Op de Bres’ in the Whitsun (Pentecost) period and the ‘Stellingmaand’ (Defence Line Month) in September – offer much to enjoy for children and adults alike, including music, theatre, art and outdoor lounge cafés.
  • There are plenty of hiking and biking tours to be made in the vicinity of the ‘Stelling’, which aren’t that long and therefore perfectly suited for children as well.
